Brisbane libraries are going 24/7 with the rollout of new library lockers, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has revealed.

The Lord Mayor said the smart library lockers are similar to those used by Australia Post and Amazon and will allow residents to collect books and other library items any time they liked.

Cr Schrinner said the new lockers would improve access to the more than 1.3 million items available from Brisbane’s libraries.

“Our network of libraries are incredible community assets that are love by Brisbane residents,” he said.

“The ability to borrow books and a great range of other resources for free has become an increasingly valuable service with living costs on the rise.

Our new lockers are similar to those used widely by Australia Post and Amazon and will be a fantastic way for busy residents to pick up books when its most convenient for them.

For residents, it will be as simple as placing the item on hold and then collecting it from the library locker.

Just like online shopping has become increasingly popular, I am confident this great new service will result in lockers being placed at more library locations across Brisbane in the future.”

The first two library lockers are currently being installed at the Holland Park and Carina libraries and will be available from 19 June 2023.

The 2023-24 Council Budget includes funding for a further four library lockers.

Cr Schrinner said the Schrinner Council would continue to invest in the future of Brisbane’s libraries.

“With more than 4.4 million visits and 6.4 million physical loans in 2022, it’s clear that our libraries are loved by residents of all ages,” he said.

“On top of the physical loans, there were almost 2.5 million digital online loans.

Our ongoing investment in our libraries ensures they are great places with something for all age groups and interests.”

The Smart Locker is a free-standing unit, which can be placed outside an existing library.

Library holds will be held for four days in the locker, with customers able to place up to 20 holds including books, DVDs, audiobooks, magazines, and CDs for collection from the 24/7 lockers.
