Every single Brisbane resident will continue to receive kerbside collection services, as part of the Schrinner Council’s Suburbs First Guarantee.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said the next round of the city-wide service would start in mid-July, with residents now able to look up the schedule and see when the collection will come to their suburb.

“In the past financial year, we brought kerbside collection back a year ahead of schedule and performed a special flood edition of kerbside collection,” Cr Schrinner said.

“We know how much residents value this service and that’s why the 2022-23 Brisbane City Council Budget has allocated $6.8 million to continue the annual city-wide service.”

Cr Schrinner said Brisbane had undertaken the biggest ever clean up after the devastating February floods, with impacted areas having Council crews sweep streets, often multiple times, to collect damaged goods off the kerb.

“In just a matter of weeks after the floods we removed 75,000 tonnes of flood-damaged goods from more than 3000 streets,” he said.

“To put this into perspective, this is five times more than what is collected during a standard year of city-wide kerbside collection.”

Cr Schrinner said kerbside collection provided residents with a free and convenient option for disposing of large household items such as furniture, white goods, and electronic waste.

“In addition to the annual collection we will also continue our free waste voucher program for all residents, making it cheaper and easier for residents to dispose of rubbish correctly,” he said.

“We will also continue to waive the $30 fee for residents wanting to order bigger recycling bins and green waste recycling bins.

We’ve had such a fantastic response to our fee waivers with more than 10,800 residents upgrading to a bigger recycling bin and 13,600 households opting in for green waste recycling bins in the past financial year to date.

By investing in our many green initiatives, we send less rubbish to landfill and convert recyclable waste into useful material, which in turn helps improve air and water quality for our residents today and into the future.”
