Residents of The Gap led the way in 2022 when it came to recycling at home and embracing Brisbane’s clean, green, and sustainable ethos.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said it was fantastic to see more than 295 residents from The Gap boosting their recycling capacity and taking advantage of Council’s service to upgrade to an extra-large yellow recycling bin this year.
“Everyone has a role to play, and we’re seeing more and more residents make conscious, sustainable decisions to help keep our beautiful city clean and green,” Cr Schrinner said.
“More than 11,200 extra-large recycling bins have been ordered this year, with the largest number of requests coming from The Gap, followed by Bridgeman Downs, McDowall, Bracken Ridge and then Aspley.
Recycling is one of the simplest ways to reduce the amount of waste ending up in landfill by making sure things go in the right bin.
Brisbane residents can upgrade to a larger recycling bin, providing an additional 100 litres capacity for your household recycling.
Since Council made a commitment to waive the $30 establishment fee in July 2020, more than 40,788 extra-large recycling bins have been rolled out across Brisbane.”
Council also saw more than 12,700 new green bins ordered and 2,827 residents benefit from Council’s compost rebate program in the past 12 months, receiving a rebate of up to $70 when they purchased eligible composting and worm farming equipment.
Cr Schrinner said more than $187,469 had been handed out to residents under the rebate program in 2022.
“We’re seeing residents take initiative by disposing of their green waste and making a positive impact on the environment from their own backyards,” he said.
“The average Brisbane bin contains 18 per cent garden waste that could have been recycled and diverted away from landfill, but we’re seeing that figure decrease.
Having a green waste recycling bin service is an easy and affordable way to recycle your garden waste that is collected every two weeks and turned into valuable compost material and used on local farms, parklands and urban gardens and land rehabilitation.
Composting and worm farming are also effective ways to produce rich compost for your garden while reducing food waste to landfill and greenhouse gas emissions.”
