Brisbane residents are being encouraged to prepare their homes for severe summer storms, with Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner announcing free green waste drop-off weekends during Spring.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned a La Nina weather system could form later this year, which could bring wet and wild weather this summer.
The Schrinner Council will waive the cost of green waste tipping the second weekend of each month during Spring to help resident prepare their yard:
- September 14-15
- October 12-13
- November 9-10
The city’s four Resource Recovery Centres are open from 6:30am to 5:45pm and located at:
- 1372 Nudgee Road, Nudgee Beach
- 360 Sherbrooke Road, Willawong
- 101 Upper Kedron Road, Ferny Grove
- 728 Tilley Road, Chandler (opposite the Sleeman Sports Complex)
More than 16,800 residents made use of free green waste drop off weekends last year, disposing of more than 2,700 tonnes of green waste and saving $312,000 in tipping fees.
This adds to the more than 476,000 tonnes of green waste which has been recycled by Council over the past five years – the equivalent of filling 866 A380 aircrafts.
Outside of these free waste weekends, residents can use their waste vouchers to dispose of their green waste or register for Council’s green waste recycling service which has been reduced to less than $1 a week.
In additional to helping residents prepare their own properties, the Schrinner Council has also:
- completed 12 planned burns
- cut more than 1440 hectares of grass for fire breaks
- completed maintenance on more than 162 kilometres worth of fire tracks and trails
The Schrinner Council will also host a free Emergency Services Expo at 7th Brigade Park in Chermside on Saturday, 12 October 2024.
The Expo will provide the community with tips and strategies to prepare their homes for before, during and after severe weather events with in person advice from SES experts.
